Jun. 24, 1853 - Bvt. Maj. Robert H. Chilton and Company B, First dragoons, arrived from Fort Leavenworth to found what became Fort Zorah, near the site of Great Bend, Kansas.


Jun. 27, 1853 - Camp Center was renamed Fort Riley -- named in honor of Maj. Gen. Bennett C. Riley who had led the first military escort along the Santa Fe Trail in 1829.
