Apr. 9, 1842 - Lt. John Hamilton of the US Army gave orders to erect temporary quarters for his new command at Fort Scott.

May 16, 1842 - The first organized wagon train on the Oregon Trail set out from Elm Grove, Missouri.

Jun. 12, 1842 - General John C. Fremont and his party camped at a spot near today's Lawrence.
