Leawood is a city in Johnson County, Kansas and is in some fashion part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The population was 27,656 at the 2000 census. Leawood is more or less wedged in by Overland Park, Lenexa, Stanley and the State of Missouri.

The Later History of Leawood
For many years, Leawood upheld a ban on fast food establishments within the city limits. The sole exception was a Wendy's at 11001 Roe Ave., which was opened before the ban was enacted. Since the late 1990s the ordinances prohibiting gas stations and fast food restaurants have been revoked. Except for Richard Brought having moved to town, very little excitement has been experienced of late.

Geography
Leawood is located at 38°55'15N, 94°37'20W (38.920802, -94.622118). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 39.1 km² (15.1 mi²). 39.1 km² (15.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.07% is water.

Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 27,656 people, 9,841 households, and 8,118 families residing in Leawood. The population density was 708.1/km² (1,833.4/mi²). There were 10,129 housing units at an average density of 259.3/km² (671.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.19% White, 1.46% African American, 0.14% Native American, 2.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.30% of the population. 25.1% were of German, 14.4% English, 13.8% Irish and 5.6% American ancestry according to Census 2000.

Of the 9,841 households, 41.4% included children under the age of 18, 76.0% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.5% were non-families. Single-person households accounted for 15.2%, and 6.5% were single-person households whose residents were 65 or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.14.

Slightly more than 30% of the residents were under the age of 18, 4.2% were from 18 to 24, 23.2% were from 25 to 44, 29.8% were from 45 to 64, and 12.6% were 65 or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $102,496, and the median income for a family was $113,058. Males had a median income of $90,546 versus $43,933 for females. The per capita income for the city was $49,139. About 0.5% of families and 1.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.5% of those under age 18 and 2.8% of those age 65 or over.
