Frontenac,

Frontenac is a city in Crawford County, Kansas. The population is about 3,079, as of 2004 estimate. It is a small town nestled in Southeastern Kansas, adjacent to Pittsburg, in the Ozark Mountain region. Frontenac claims Archie San Romani, Sr. and Denise and Dian Gallup as natives.

 

Frontenac is located about 25 minutes south of Fort Scott, Kansas, about an hour west of Springfield, Missouri, and about an hour and a half northeast of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Frontenac was established as a coal mining town in 1886, and was in the Cherokee-Crawford Coal Fields. In 1888, Frontenac had the worst mining disaster in Kansas. An explosion killed 47 miners.

Frontenac, an incorporated city of the second class in Crawford county, is located 9 miles southeast of Girard, the county seat, at the junction of the Atchison, Topeka & Sante Fe and the Kansas City Southern railroads. It is also on the line of the Joplin & Pittshurg electric railway. Frontenac has a bank, an international money order postoffice, express and telegraph service, telephone connections, several good mercantile establishments, hotels, etc. It is situated in the coal fields, and the principal industry is coal mining. A Catholic academy is at Frontenac, and the city has a good public school system. The population in 1910 was 3,396, a gain of 1,591 during the preceding decade.

Frontenac is located at 37°27'16N, 94°41'43W (37.454465, -94.695185).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²). 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.25% is water.

Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,996 people, 1,230 households, and 783 families residing in the city.currently as of 2004 the population is 3,079 . The population density was 291.4/km² (755.6/mi²). There were 1,329 housing units at an average density of 129.3/km² (335.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.70% White, 0.20% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.43% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.

There were 1,230 households out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 32.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 81.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.1 males.The median income for a household in the city was $33,558, and the median income for a family was $42,214. Males had a median income of $30,474 versus $21,163 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,349. About 4.4% of families and 7.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.6% of those under age 18 and 9.6% of those age 65 or over.
